What are the benefits and drawbacks of having an unregistered unit in a multi-family building?

    that’s a good question…

The bad thing is that its not registered with the city. If the city was to ever inspect the space, it would be deemed unsuitable to live in. As an investor, we see these all the time and as long as there are no safety issues, I personally wouldn’t have a problem with one extra unit.

The extra units are usually found in the basement of multiplexes and are either occupied by the super or rented out at a very competitive price.

In a nut shell, as long as the units are safe, no one comes knocking to check and see if all the units are legal.
